THOSE who have been waiting for a chance to clear their doubts about China’s Belt and Road Initiative will be able to find out more at a talk in Menara Star’s Cybertorium in Phileo Damansara, Petaling Jaya, on Thursday.
One of the speakers is LBS Bina Group Bhd group managing director and Malaysia-Guangdong Chamber of Investment Promotion (MGCIP) founder Tan Sri Lim Hock San.
“The One Belt One Road (Obor) initiative was launched in 2013 by the Chinese government, covering 65 countries.
“‘Belt’ refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt while ‘road’ refers to the Maritime Silk Road.
“The Obor Initiative encompasses countries that account for 29% of global GDP, a win-win co-operation between China and countries along the Belt and Road.
“During the 2017 PCC meeting and NPC meeting, it was evident that the Chinese government’s goal was to create common prosperity through this movement.”
He said in the past, South-East Asian countries had benefitted from the first tranche of infrastructure projects such as the China-Laos Railway, Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, the Nakhon Ratchasima-Bangkok high-speed railway, and in Malaysia, the East Coast Rail link.
“It is without doubt that Obor will create new job opportunities, improve cross-border connectivity and spike investment flow into Malaysia, benefitting the fields of property development, mobile payment, infrastructure, trading and cultural-based industries,” he explained.
Lim added that China’s growing middle-class had raised the demand for imported products and premium goods from Malaysia, including Musang King durian, coffee, bird’s nest, confectioneries and halal food products.
Forum attendees will get the opportunity to also direct their questions to Guangdong Economic and Trade Representative in Malaysia Eng Kim Huat, while Star Media Group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai will be giving a welcoming speech at the event.
The first session of the forum will see Eng speaking on “Exploring Business Opportunities in Guangdong,” while the second session by Lim will dig deeper into the topic titled “One Belt One Road Initiative.”
