IN a bid to combat crime, Bandar Sungai Long Section 7 Rukun Tetangga (KRT) was formed 10 years ago.
KRT chairman Danny Lau said the crime rate in the neighbourhood was high and the frequent break-ins had pushed the residents to set up the committee to address the problems.
“When we turned it into a guarded community, the crime rate drastically reduced.
“Since then, we have organised various events for the residents such as durian festival, Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations as well as recycling campaigns,” he said.
Section 7 is the first residential neighbourhood in Bandar Sungai Long.
The township, which now has 700 houses, has been around for more than 22 years.
Lau said the neighbourhood was the first to implement the Pioneer Project on Recycling in September 2015.
“The state-level project was launched here and now we have a recycling centre for the residents,” he said.
Meanwhile, other issues troubling residents are the growing number of abandoned cars taking up parking space in the area and a spike in dengue cases there.
“We are having trouble identifying the car owners and this problem has existed for more than five years.
“We have highlighted the issue with the council and hope they will act on it,” he said.
