A NEWLY constructed traffic light junction in Cheras, Selangor, is badly designed and poses a danger to motorists.
Serdang MCA Public Services Complaints bureau chairman Allan Liew said ever since the Jalan Cheras Perdana-Jalan Suakasih traffic light junction was completed about a week ago, there has been at least one accident and many near misses.
“The design is very confusing for motorists, especially those using the road for the first time.
“The two-lane Jalan Cheras Perdana at the T-junction traffic light to Jalan Suakasih is now a five-lane road.
“Four lanes are dedicated to those turning left and right into Jalan Suakasih, and only one lane is for vehicles from both directions.
“Vehicles from Jalan Suakasih turning right into Jalan Cheras Perdana have to go to the extreme right lane which is very confusing.
“Many turn into oncoming traffic despite the ‘no entry’ and ‘turn here’ signs on the junction,” Liew said during a site visit.
“The Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) had said the design was approved by traffic consultants.
“But there are many complaints and it is dangerous. I hope MPKj will study the traffic flow in the area again and come up with a better design as soon as possible,” said Liew.
Media members who were present also witnessed many vehicles turning into the wrong lanes.
Nicholas Cheng, 34, described how his wife was knocked off her motorcycle and dragged 50m by a vehicle turning left into Jalan Cheras Perdana on Sept 5.
“It was around 10pm and my wife was near the Jalan Cheras Perdana traffic light junction to turn into Jalan Suakasih.
“A four-wheel drive from Jalan Suakasih turned left at high speed and ate into the next lane where my wife was.
“The sole lane dedicated for vehicles coming into Jalan Cheras Perdana is narrower than a normal lane, so vehicles turning fast are bound to eat into the next lane.
“My wife suffered injuries to her hands and legs,” he said.
