TAYLOR’S International School Puchong (TIS Puchong) pushed design boundaries with its 31,900sq m campus before its first student cohort in January 2015.
“The campus is purpose-built to engage students,” said Taylor’s Schools president B.K. Gan.
To achieve this, the design process was not confined to just the architects and interior designers.
“We wanted the academics to have a say in how to design the spaces because they know what is required to make learning effective,” he commented.
According to NWKA Architects Sdn Bhd principal director Ng Wai Keong, the intention was to incorporate aspirations of Taylor’s Schools into the architecture.
Stimulating environment
The architecture of the campus highlights a flowing concept with curved roofs and open spaces.
The innovative philosophy behind the design is to arouse curiosity in learning.
Open spaces and classrooms are organically integrated to encourage interaction between students.
This will help them develop stronger interpersonal and social skills as these are key traits for success in future.
Interesting forms, functions and colours can be seen on campus to stimulate curious minds.
A perfect example is the two tiered library interior inspired by the concept of a flowing river. The space motivates students to learn.
“If a place like the library looks like a book warehouse, youths and children will neither be attracted to it nor stimulated by it,” said Gan.
“However, here, we have created a delightful space for students to explore.
“The space is bright and cheery with interesting nooks and corners as well as holes in the wall that children can climb into to do their reading in total peace.”
Following the natural habitat theme, the cafeteria is structured like a cave with lights and poles resembling stalactites and stalagmites.
“The aim of the interior design is to foster affinity between students and nature,” he said.
The architects have also made the design environmentally sustainable.
According to Ng, the large curved roof is specially constructed to provide natural and cooling cross-ventilation.
A natural breeze stream creates a comfortable learning environment and at the same time, reduces energy usage.
Greening and learning
The TIS Puchong campus is extensively landscaped.
Greenery is intertwined with built-up areas to blend nature with the building so that students learn the importance of caring for their environment.
The green walls not only beautify the buildings and produce a calming effect but also act as a natural sunscreen for the classrooms.
World-class facilities
Top-class facilities go hand-inhand with innovative design sense.
A state-of-the-art auditorium, fully equipped science labs, design and technology labs are designed for fun learning.
There are also plenty of chances for physical activity as the campus has excellent sports facilities from a swimming pool, track and field to basketball, badminton and tennis courts.
TIS Puchong aspires to develop every aspect of a child so they can grow to be dynamic global citizens.
It aims to develop resilient individuals, nurture responsible leaders and cultivate respectful and caring mindsets.
