The Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry have blacklisted 146 private housing developers. Deputy Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sidique said they were blacklisted for abandoning their projects.
“The action to blacklist the 146 developers affects some 3,607 directors of the companies,” she said when answering a question by Datuk Kamarul Baharin Abbas (PAS-Teluk Kemang).
She said there were 216 abandoned projects, of which 165 had been revived and completed between 2009 and April this year. Another 51 projects were being revived.
Halimah said those blacklisted would not be able to apply for advertisement permits for future projects. She said amendments to Section 118 of the Housing Development Act came in force on June 1.
Under the new law, she said errant developers might be liable to a fine of RM250,000 and up to RM500,000, three years’ jail, or both, upon conviction.
She also said innocent buyers were given better protection under the law because they could terminate their sales and purchase agreements with a developer who had abandoned their project for more than six months.
