PEOPLE’S Housing Project (PPR) Pekan Kepong tenants, who received tenancy agreement termination notices, have urged Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to reconsider the decision as they want to appeal their case.
They want their reasons to be heard before their agreements are terminated.
They also felt that there were many loopholes that DBKL had to look into, especially on the tenants that were allowed to live in the units.
Food trader Leong Seng Heng, 64, said he was shocked to find a notice by DBKL pasted on the door of his house on July 28 as he did not break any rule.
“I work at night and I was not at home when the notice was pasted on the door.
“DBKL thinks that I have left the unit vacant and they wanted to seize it,” he said, adding that he did not rent the house to other people.
About 30 units were given the notices asking units’ applicants to evict within two weeks when the notice was served on July 28 after a joint operation by DBKL’s Housing Management and Community Development Department.
On Aug 11, the units received another warning, asking the tenants to move out in a week.
Units which the tenants were found renting out to others would be seized.
There are a total of 948 units in PPR Pekan Kepong.
Tan Yee Heng 51, who lived with his brother and 90-year-old mother, said the DBKL officer refused to include his mother’s name as tenant while applying for a PPR unit because she held a red IC.
“We have applied for a blue IC but until now we still have not got it.
“This created a lot of complications and I was given the notice because of this.
“How can I abandon my mother and not let her stay in the unit,” he said.
Contractor Lee Cheng Hup, 53, who had waited for seven years to get a unit, said the officers did not allow him to include his children’s name during the application.
“When I applied for it seven years ago, I was told that I could add my children’s name later when I got the PPR unit, but I am not allowed to now,” he said.
DBKL advisory board member Datuk Wilson Lau Hoi Keong, who called for the press conference at the site, said he would call for a dialogue with DBKL and hoped the eviction period would be extended.
“The tenants’ complaints to DBKL will be highlighted.
“I will also bring this matter up with the relevant departments and with Deputy Federal Territories Minister Datuk Dr Loga Bala,” he said.
