KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested four people in connection with a syndicate scamming people into purchasing non-existent properties in Sg Tua.

Sentul OCPD Asst Comm R. Munusamy said police were alerted after one of the victims lodged a report on April 18.

“The victim, a woman, claimed she had seen an advertisement online and went to a showroom at Jalan Segambut where she was offered a unit for RM120,000.

“The agents claimed that she only needed to pay a booking fee of RM5,000, which she did,” he told reporters at the Sentul police headquarters on Tuesday.

He said, the victim, fearing something amiss, went to the Selayang Municipal Council to check on the validity of the housing development and was told there was no such project.

“Following the report, we raided several locations and arrested three men and a woman aged between 31 and 51.

“One of the suspects was previously involved in another scam to sell non-existent vehicles,” he said, adding that police were now tracking down two more suspects.

He said 16 reports have been lodged in connection with the case so far, with losses amounting to about RM80,000.

In an unrelated case, police have arrested eight people involved in the armed robbery of a Toyota SUV.

ACP Munusamy said the incident occurred at around 7am on Sunday.

The woman had parked her Toyota SUV in front of her restaurant and was alighting her vehicle when a motorcycle approached.

“The pillion rider got off and pointed a weapon resembling a pistol, and demanded for her car keys.

“She complied and the suspect drove off in her car,” he said, adding that police raided two hotels in the city and arrested six men and two women aged in their 30s.

He said they also seized the Toyota SUV, a motorcycle, and an air-pistol.

“The eight suspects have been remanded to assist in investigations,” he said.
