PETALING JAYA: More than 300 attended the Malaysia Green Building Council (malaysiaGBC) Annual Dinner and Leadership in Sustainability Awards 2024, celebrating the building industry’s effort in decarbonising and transforming the built environment.

Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad presented malaysiaGBC’s CarbonScore Initiative certificates to 13 pioneering local building projects that aim to be zero-carbon. CarbonScore is an assessment and reporting tool for buildings to measure and keep track of building-related carbon emissions.

The event also presented recognition to seventeen recipients of the Leadership in Sustainability Awards 2024, comprising developers, building owners and manufacturers. Among others, Gamuda Land bagged the Gold prize in Business Leadership in Sustainability, the MBPP Night Shelter was awarded the Platinum prize in Outstanding Green Institutional Building, while The Astaka received Merit in Outstanding Green Residential Building.

malaysiaGBC president Serina Hijjas said the organisation has made significant strides in promoting green building practices across Malaysia over the past year.

“From advancing innovative designs and construction methods to advocating for policies that prioritise energy efficiency, energy transition and decarbonisation, our collective efforts are an engine that drives a more sustainable and environmentally conscious nation,” she said.

“The launch of our National Energy Transition Roadmap last year, the introduction of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act, the effects of which are only now starting to be implemented, as well as ongoing efforts towards biodiversity conservation and to green our cities are all concrete actions that directly impact our carbon bottom line,” she added.

A member of the World Green Building Council, malaysiaGBC said that it will continue to work collaboratively with government, industry and professional associations to shape policies and regulations and facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building in green building design, construction, operations and retrofits.
