FIVE new outdoor gym sets have been added to the USJ 1 recreational field.
A trio station, beam jump, ostrich ride, double mirage walker and knee lift, which cost RM29,400, were installed by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council.
Another RM3,700 was also spent on a see-saw.
The area, known as Padang Cegas on Jalan USJ 1/2, already has facilities such as tennis, basketball, skating and futsal courts, slides and monkey bars.
During the launch on Dec 1, students of Excel Education International were already there bright and early to utilise the equipment.
Lai Sue Ann, 13, said her school did not have its own field, so students used the facilities at the park.
“We come here for Physical Education class and it is good that we now have new equipment to use.
"Maybe they can add swings next,” she said.
She said her friends loved playing on the monkey bars adding that the equipment needed upgrading.
Sue Ann and her schoolmates mentioned this to Subang Jaya assemblyman Hannah Yeoh, who took note of the feedback during the launch.
Speaking to the media, Yeoh said there had been complaints from residents nearby that there were people who drove their vehicles up to the futsal court to drift on the court.
“I urge the public to use the facilities responsibly. Be mindful that this is for public use and paid using public funds,” she said.
She noted that a common problem, especially at the SS14 public field, is the misuse of the area by those drinking beer and hard liquor.
“I have asked the police to do regular patrolling here because it is dangerous for children who use the facilities, if there are broken bottles lying around,” she added.
The outdoor gym in USJ 1 is not the first in the Subang Jaya constituency.
The facilities are already in place in USJ 2, USJ 4, USJ 5, USJ 11-12, SS 15 and SS 19.
“USJ 1 is big and densely populated.
“Having outdoor gym equipment is a new trend for public parks. I do not know how much the maintenance is going to cost MPSJ. Maintenance depends on the usage and as you see in this park, usage is high,” said Yeoh.
She said more facilities would be added for the children in USJ 1 and would look into installing swings.
She also said that the council had been asked to do regular audits on outdoor equipment to ensure they were safe to use.
She also urged the council to upkeep the facility provided.
In a separate matter, Yeoh said snakes had become a problem in Subang Jaya the past few weeks.
She said there had been reports from USJ 1, USJ 3A, USJ 5, USJ 9 and PJS 11.
“It could be climate change or because of areas being cleared that caused them to go into areas populated by humans.
“The Wildlife and National Parks Department said it was very difficult to trap snakes, instead it advised the public to take note of shrubbery and holes in the ground around their houses, which could be hiding spots for snakes,” she added.
