THE Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will have a new trial route for the PJ City Bus – PJ04 – effective Aug 1.
The route will connect the Taman Bahagia LRT station, Kampung Tunku and Sea Park.
The trial period will end on Oct 31, after which the council will decide if it should be continued.
The new route aims to shorten the distance between Kampung Tunku and Sea Park through Jalan SS3/80, Jalan SS3/29, Jalan SS8/29 and Jalan SS3/39.
The bus route, the fourth under the free bus scheme, was launched on Jan 18 this year.
Based on a ridership count, more than 1,100 passengers commute along this route daily and more than 20,000 on a monthly basis.
However, to maximise ridership the council had realigned the route.
It was reported that the council’s most solid effort in alleviating the traffic situation so far has been its introduction of the free PJ City Bus service in 2014 by Petaling Jaya mayor Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain’s predecessor, Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad.
Now covering four routes from PJS 3 until University Malaya Medical Centre, Kampung Tunku, SS3, SS4 and SS5, Azizi said the council was looking to expand the service to more housing and commercial areas and increase the fleet as well.
It was also reported that other measures to increase public transport take-up and lower the number of vehicles on the road include construction of Park n Ride parking lots under electric pylons at LRT stations in the city.
