SUBANG Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) is once again going green by having polystyrene-free Ramadan bazaars.
This is the fourth year MPSJ is organising its “Love the Environment” (Cintakan Alam Sekitar) and #Bebas Plastik (#PlasticFree) campaign, in line with its Green City Plan 2030 as well as the state government’s Selangor Green Technology Action Plan 2015-2018.
MPSJ had introduced its “Say No to Polystyrene” campaign at Ramadan bazaars in 2014 and enforced the ban last year.
Council deputy president Mohd Zulkarnain Che Ali, who is currently acting president, distributed reusable bags to the public at the Ramadan bazaar in BK5, Bandar Kinrara, Puchong.
Also present were Kinrara assemblyman Ng Sze Han and MPSJ councillor Mehanathan Embamurthi.
Mohd Zulkarnain said the council is continuing the exemplary vendor award as well as “bring your own container” campaign this year.
A total of 15 exemplary vendors will get appreciation certificates, hampers, RM500 cash and the chance to apply for a bazaar of their choice at next year’s Ramadan instead of having to go through the balloting process.
“We encourage people to bring their own food containers, the aim is to become plastic-free,” he said.
This year, MPSJ had approved 1,393 applications for Ramadan bazaar licences.
Vendors are required to trade at the specified site, not sublet the lot to someone else and register their assistants with the council.
Vendors and assistants are also required to wear clean aprons and caps and use the council’s blue 8x8 canopy.
