KAJANG: Municipal Council (MPKj) president Mohd Sayuthi Bakar has cautioned residents against complacency in light of a spike in dengue cases in Hulu Langat, Selangor, which recorded 5,300 cases with 16 deaths until May 21.
On May 13, the dengue figures for the district stood at 4,927 cases with 14 deaths.
“Within eight days, we had 373 cases and two deaths.
“Fighting dengue is a concerted effort. We urge the people to be vigilant and clean up their roof gutters and the surroundings of their home,” he said.
Mohd Sayuthi said to check the spread of dengue, people must spend at least 10 minutes a week to remove unwanted containers and clear dried leaves in their compounds, especially after it rains.
“Our officers need the people to cooperate and open their gates for fogging activities and to identify potential breeding sites,” he said at MPKj’s full board meeting.
He added that with the change in weather, the council has stepped up checks in its efforts to rid public areas and residential estates of mosquito breeding grounds.
Mohd Sayuthi also said that the dengue outbreak in Kajang was spread out in 132 localities, but there were 27 hotspots.
MPKj municipality recorded 3,886 dengue cases with eight deaths, he said, adding that the hotspots were Kajang, Cheras, Semenyih, Hulu Langat and Beranang.
Councillor Kon Weng Siang reminded people to turn over their water buckets in bathrooms before going outstation during the school holidays, as clean water was a good breeding spot for mosquitoes.
