Rental arrears amounting to RM38mil from the People’s Housing Project (PPR) flats has Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz emphasising timely payment.
He said this regarding the recent proposed implementation of the rent-to-own concept by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Based on a system of leasing with the option to buy, Amin Nordin said the concept will give eligible first-time housebuyers, who are unable to obtain bank loans, a chance to own a PPR unit.
“Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is still making preparations to manage the rent-to-own system, but the monthly rental of RM124 for PPR units did not take into account the additional factors under the system and may cost more.
“We will manage these leases but want all tenants to be disciplined in paying the rates set because according to the Cabinet’s decision, if they do not pay rent for three months, we will take back the PPR unit.
“If all goes well, the system will be implemented this year,” he said at the ‘Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2016 Campaign’ launch on Monday.
The campaign aims to light the fire of patriotism for the approaching 59th National Day through the distribution of 50,000 flags of all sizes to government agencies, non-governmental organisations as well as private companies.
“The meaning of ‘Merdeka’ should not be viewed as a ritual or event filler, it is more than that and must be present in the minds and hearts of every citizen.
“As such, DBKL has been encouraging all owners and managers of buildings to fly the flag on their premises as well as light up their buildings at night during this year’s celebration,” he said.
Amin Nordin then began handing out flags to the school for the visually impaired at Jalan Raja Laut, the Mara Building, Berjaya Times Square, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and KL Sogo.
