KUALA LUMPUR: Mah Sing Group Bhd has entered into a second collaboration agreement with Bain Capital-supported Bridge Data Centres (BDC) to enhance the Mah Sing DC Hub@Southville City. This site, spanning around 36 acres, is set to offer a power capacity of 200 megawatts (MW) as part of a broader development that aims to reach a total planned capacity of 300 MW, contributing significantly to Malaysia’s digital infrastructure.

The latest partnership builds on an initial agreement made in May 2024, with projections for the data centre’s first phase to be operational by 2026. BDC will make a forfeitable deposit while finalising a Joint Venture (JV) agreement, which will include creating a joint venture company, determining share ratios and executing the sales and purchase agreement (SPA) for the land.

BDC is actively pursuing high-capacity clients, including hyperscale and artificial intelligence (AI) data centres, and will spearhead the design and infrastructure development to cater to these needs. The valuation of the 36-acre land for this project stands at approximately RM311mil, marking a strategic investment aligned with Malaysia’s 2025 Budget that focuses on digitalisation and AI growth.

The location of Southville City is advantageous, being within 20km of major data centre hubs in Cyberjaya and Bukit Jalil, while also benefiting from Mah Sing’s lengthy history of efficient project execution and access to essential resources like power and high-speed connectivity. Furthermore, Mah Sing owns additional land in Johor Bahru that could support future developments.

The timing of this initiative is particularly favourable, coinciding with Malaysia securing RM73.7bil in investments from tech giants like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft amidst a global surge in demand for data centre capacity driven by advancements in AI and cloud computing. The collaboration with BDC is expected to attract further industry leaders to the Mah Sing DC Hub, reinforcing its status as a premier data centre destination.

Mah Sing founder and group managing director Tan Sri Leong Hoy Kum expressed confidence in this partnership, highlighting the company’s commitment to developing advanced digital infrastructure. Chief executive officer of BDC Eric Fan echoed this sentiment.

“We are excited to expand our collaboration with Mah Sing, which significantly boosts BDC’s capacity resources in Malaysia. This partnership reinforces BDC’s commitment to invest in Malaysia’s digital infrastructure as a leading data centre provider in the region, while consistently delivering exceptional service to our clients,” said Fan.

Mah Sing DC Hub@Southville City is an ideal location for a data centre hub, situated within a 20km proximity to the existing data centre hubs of both Cyberjaya and Bukit Jalil, creating a strategic triangle of data centre hubs. Additionally, Mah Sing DC Hub@Southville City is less than 50km from Telekom Malaysia’s (TM) upcoming new cable landing station in Morib, enabling it to provide a dark fibre network for the data centre hub. Its proximity to Kuala Lumpur City Centre and Putrajaya, the federal administrative capital, makes the region a central force in Malaysia’s digital transformation and technological advancement.
