PENANG Gerakan Batu Uban constituency coordinator Dr Kiew Hen Chong has urged the state government to implement more safety measures at the Sungai Dua flood mitigation project on Penang island.
Dr Kiew claimed that works at the site posed a safety hazard to the public.
“The many concrete structures lying around the site may be dangerous to passing motorists as well as pedestrians.
“There is also a crane parked at the site which also poses risks to people and vehicles,” he told a press conference at his service centre in Jalan Sungai Dua recently.
Dr Kiew also urged the state not to delay the project to avoid inconveniencing road users.
It was reported that the RM4.4mil project includes the building of an arch bridge in place of the present culvert. Construction will take 15 months.
State Local Government, Traffic and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow had reportedly said the Drainage and Irrigation Department would also widen the road to facilitate the second phase which would begin in 2017.
He had said the 5m arch bridge would replace the culvert as it was necessary to deepen the river in Phase Two after the widening of the road.
When contacted for a response, Chow said engineers from the Public Works Department would be asked to look into the complaint and improve the safety features at the construction site.
