There’s something about a new year that compels people to look over their lives and compare their current selves to an earlier point in time.

While the 10-year challenge has got many people around the world marvelling at their own development over the past decade, some wider perspectives have emerged to highlight places and how certain environments have changed in the last ten years.

Perhaps it is simply the calendar cycling back to the beginning, or the significance of the approaching year – Malaysians are not alone in setting 2020 as a year by which we should have achieved our most ambitious goals – whatever the reason, it seems that almost everyone is looking back over the course of an eventful decade to chart our progress towards higher ideals.

In the last decade, Kuala Lumpur has changed significantly – new additions to the skyline have appeared, vehicular choke points have been upgraded for smoother traffic flow, new transit lines have opened to cover almost every square kilometre of the city centre, and the streets have been revamped with restored pavements and new sidewalks.

Perhaps the most well-known of changes can be seen in the two images juxtaposed above – the banks of the formerly muddy confluence of two rivers, the Gombak and Klang rivers, was a far cry from the current spectacle of light and smoke that is now referred to as the River of Life.

The banks of the rivers have been visibly upgraded – the unsightly graffiti has been whitewashed and replaced by conscientiously painted murals intended to charm – even the water seems to have benefited from a concerted clean-up effort involving multiple federal agencies and began in 2012.

When the Best@ Golden Triangle supplement rolls off the presses on 23rd January, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised to see the full range of changes that have occurred in the last decade – including the latest residential and recreational developments that give this treasured region of Kuala Lumpur its unique character.
