KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is owed a staggering RM100mil in uncollected assessment taxes and rental last year.
A huge chunk of the unpaid monies is from the Public Housing Scheme (PPR) and rental from markets.
Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz said a campaign to get city folk to pay will be carried out next month.
“DBKL will open booths at 32 locations in government housing schemes and townships on Saturdays and Sundays from Aug 6 to 20 to make it easy for them to pay their assessment fees, rental and traffic compounds,” he told reporters at DBKL headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut yesterday.
“Almost every year, 10% or RM102mil from RM1.2bil of assessment taxes are not settled by business owners and residents.
“We have to spend money to hire people to go door-to-door to collect the fees,” said Amin Nordin while pointing out that the rent is among the cheapest in the world.
The monthly rent for PPR units is RM124.
Amin Nordin warned that after the campaign period, DBKL will seize the properties and initiate legal proceedings against those who still owe them money.
The mayor also urged people to settle their traffic compounds as there will be a special rate for motorcycles (RM20), cars, MPV, vans, SUV (RM30) and heavy vehicles (RM100).
On illegal posters and bunting, the mayor said a special task force had been established to remove unauthorised advertisements.
Last year, DBKL removed 1.3 million illegal posters, banners, bunting and stickers and almost 500,000 in the first half of this year.
DBKL also worked with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to disconnect telephone numbers displayed on illegal advertisements.
Since last year, 1,829 telephone numbers listed on illegal advertisements had been submitted to MCMC of which, 1,563 were terminated.
Over 670 compounds were issued while 520 cases were taken to court.
“This time, companies (registered with DBKL) which are caught, will not only lose their deposit but will also have their licences cancelled,” Amin Nordin said.
