PONTIAN: Embankments will be built along Sungai Segamat under the latest flood mitigation initiative, says state Health and Environment committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat.

He said the state government had asked for an allocation of RM17mil from the Federal Government for the project.

The embankments would be constructed from Kampung Jawa to Felda Medoi.

“We hope the project will be able to prevent the district from being hit by floods especially during the monsoon season,” Ayub told reporters after attending a town hall session on a low carbon society at Dewan Jubli Intan here.

He said previous flood mitigation efforts in the district, costing about RM231mil, had reduced the severity of the floods. Segamat was the worst affected district in the recent floods in Johor but at noon yesterday, only 86 people remained at four flood relief centres.

Ayub added the delay in constructing the Gemas-Johor Baru double tracking electric train project had also contributed to floods in the district.

Meanwhile, the first mini hydro generating plant costing RM50,000 will be installed in the Tanjung Pia area here under a collaboration between the Pontian District Council (MDP) and Toyama City, Japan.

“Apart from promoting a low carbon environment, the plant would also generate electricity using a minimum amount of water,” said Ayub.

During the session, Ayub pointed out that since 2013, the state government had introduced several initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint.

He said among the initiatives include the Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit System, Iskandar Malaysia Bus, Iskandar Malaysia Eco Life Challenge, tree planting programmes and many others.
