GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government has called for action to be taken against the developer of a RM1.2bil coastal reclamation project dubbed ‘The Dubai of Malaysia’ in Kedah.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng expressed shock that reclamation work on the Aman Laut project had begun even without the approval of the Department of Environment.
He said those who contravened the law could face action under Section 34 (A) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, which carries a maximum RM500,000 fine or five years’ jail or both upon conviction.
“I am shocked that they can start the project without an Environmental Impact Assessment report, which is needed before any reclamation.
“The relevant ministry and authorities must punish those involved,” he said at a press conference in Komtar yesterday.
It was earlier reported that the RM1.2bil mixed development project in Kuala Kedah had been issued an immediate stop-work order by the Department of Environment (DoE) through a notice dated May 15.
The ambitious project comprises high-end bungalows, chic condominiums, malls and luxury eateries.
