The upcoming RM600mil Ikea store in Aspen Vision City, Batu Kawan, Penang, is scheduled for opening in the first quarter of 2019.

Ikea Southeast Asia managing director Christian Rojkjaer said they were targeting some six million visitors a year, the same number received at its store in Damansara in Kuala Lumpur yearly.

“We expect the figure to be the same at our new store in Aspen Vision City. This store will put Ikea within an hour drive of nearly a million households in Penang.

“And knowing how many Malaysians own cars, we expect many more to come from everywhere in Northern Malaysia.”

Rojkjaer said this during a question-and-answer session after the ground-breaking ceremony, which was attended by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Ambassador of Sweden to Malaysia Dag Juhlin-Dannfelt.

Also present at the session were Aspen (Group) Holdings Ltd president and chief executive officer Datuk M. Murly and Ikea Batu Kawan store manager Pathmalingam Arumugam.

Rojkjaer said the public could look forward to ideas and products which would help them enjoy a more sustainable lifestyle at home while saving money along the way.

“The range includes products such as LED light bulbs, efficient taps, food savers, recycling bins and home gardening solutions.”

The 39,979sq m Ikea Batu Kawan store, the fourth in the country, will feature Smaland (a free playground for kids), a furniture showroom, market hall where furnishing products are displayed, a self-serve area which is stacked with flat-packed products ready to be taken home, and Ikea Restaurant and Swedish Bistro & Food Market, where Ikea’s famous meatballs, curry puffs and chicken wings are available.

Ikea Southeast Asia owns and operates Ikea’s stores in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The company also develops and owns shopping centres anchored by Ikea.
