CLEAN, modern, green and unconventional — these are the key designs proposed for the new Teluk Kumbar Market Complex.
SAM Arkitek Perunding head design architect Mohd Fakhri Abdul Rahman said the main idea was to create an environment that is clean and unconventional, unlike the normal markets.
“Firstly, the market must be clean, hygienic, odourless and modern. Secondly, it should be a place where the community can interact with one another.
“Thirdly, the design must also emphasise on the green building aspect,” he said after the prize presentation ceremony for the national level design competition for the market complex in Komtar, Penang, on Monday.
Mohd Fakhri said the design would divide the market into a wet zone and a semi-wet or dry zone.
“The stalls selling wet goods such as meat, poultry, and fish will have a dedicated service lane at the back of the market.
“For the partially wet or dry goods like vegetables and grocery items, they will sell the items at the front part of the market.
“Creating a separation of wet and dry goods, we feel will positively impact market-goers,” he added.
Earlier, SAM Arkitek Perunding, represented by Mohd Fakhri and its principal Samuel Zainuddin, was awarded a prize money of RM35,000 and a certificate for winning the competition.
Arkitek Yee Loon took home the second prize of RM25,000 and a certificate while Johnny Ooi Architect bagged the third prize of RM15,000 and a certificate.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the competition was jointly organised by the Penang Island City Council and the Malaysian Institute of Architects Northern Chapter on April 20.
A total of 27 entries was received from across the country.
It was reported that the proposed 1.77ha market site in Jalan Teluk Kumbar opposite SK Teluk Kumbar will have 96 stalls when completed.
Among those present at the ceremony were MBPP mayor Datuk Patahiyah Ismail, state Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow, MBPP Building Department director Yew Tung Seang, and councillors Felix Ooi Keat Hin and Ong Ah Teong.
