MALACCA: Malacca will pursue the Jernih Dam project in Alor Gajah despite difficulties in acquiring the land.
The dam is seen as a pre-emptive measure to prevent water shortage in the state, projected in 2025.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the dam could complement the state’s water reserve over the next few years.
“The dam could function as ‘off-river storage’ to ensure supply as the state is undergoing rapid development,” he said after holding his post-Exco press conference at SMK Munshi Abdullah in Batu Berendam here.
The project was put on hold due to land acquisition matters and the state government hopes to resolve this.
Earlier, Idris was quoted as saying his officials were in contact with their counterparts in Negri Sembilan to discuss the construction of the dam.
He said discussions were necessary as the project covers a huge site and a large part of the area would straddle the border of both states.
“The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry had asked for the views of the Negri Sembilan government on the building of the project.
“We have agreed that whatever issues be resolved first through discussions between the two sides,” Idris said.
The Jernih Dam project is expected to cost RM190mil and spans a 160ha site. It was earlier scheduled to be completed by 2018.
The project is envisioned to prevent future water crises in Malacca while meeting the demand from new townships.
