MEMORIES of his early days as a shuttler came flooding back for Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei when he was presented with a condo unit in Taman Maluri, Cheras by Orando Holdings Sdn Bhd for his silver medal feat at the Rio Olympics.

Lee said it was like taking a walk down memory lane as Taman Maluri was where he started his career as a professional shuttler.

“It has a special place in my heart because the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) Academy used to be located here.

“This is the place I had come to when I first arrived in Kuala Lumpur,” Lee said.

“For this, I would like to thank Orando Holdings managing director Datuk Eng Wei Chun for the reward. This is definitely a kind of recognition for sportsmen in general.

“I hope more companies will step forward to reward sportsmen who perform as a motivation for them to go further,” he said, during a press conference following the sale and purchase agreement signing ceremony at Lavile Condominium showroom.

Orando gave Lee a fully furnished, three-bedroom Lavile condominium unit measuring 1,100sq ft, which comes with a view of the Petronas Twin Towers.

Eng said Lee had earlier shown interest in purchasing a unit there, so he volunteered to give the shuttler a unit.

“It is a recognition of his achievement.

“During his matches, I could see all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, coming together to support him.

“This is what I call the Lee Chong Wei spirit. It unites us all as one,” he said.

The four-block, 49-storey condominium is expected to be completed in 2021.

It consists of 1,300 units, with 40% of the first phase of the project consisting of two blocks already booked.

“This is considered good, given the slow sentiment of the market,” Eng added.

During the ceremony, Orando also donated RM20,000 to Madrasah Hashimiah, a Rohingya and Myanmar Muslim community school for orphans and the poor.
