KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) and the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) are hosting an exhibition of architectural designs by the late Le Corbusier in Dewan Tunku Canselor from now till July 3, 2022.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Alliance Francaise Kuala Lumpur president Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Also present at the launching ceremony were French Ambassador Roland Gatharague, PAM president Sarly Adre Sarkum and past president Lillian Tay, RT+Q Architects director Rene Tan as well as UM faculty of built environment dean professor Anuar Alias and school of architecture head Helena Aman Hashim.

The aim is to acquaint the young students with the design ideas of the modernist icon, who was best known for his radical approach for his time, said Tengku Zatashah.

Born as Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier was an influential architect and city planner whose designs combined functionalism with bold sculptural expressionism, she said.

"The fact that his architecture was global and in other countries as well as 17 buildings by Le Corbusier being recognised by Unesco as World Heritage sites really demonstrate the influence he had on the Modern Movement.

"What is interesting today is to see how his influence back then, the needs he addressed, is still so relevant today, and prevalent today in our drive for urban planning," she said.

Called LC121 Uncovering The Hand: A Journey Through Le Corbusier’s Forms, the exhibition is hosted by UM's faculty of built environment and faculty of creative arts together with PAM, supported by Foundation Le Corbusier and Alliance Francaise Singapore.

Over 120 models of the works of the late Le Corbusier from the private collection of RT+Q Architects, Singapore are exhibited. The physical models are the work of interns at RT+Q. Through the years, it has been a tradition for interns that come through the office to spend time building a model of a Le Corbusier work.
