LANGKAWI: Tropicana Corporation Bhd (Tropicana) is building a RM2.5mil Pantai Kok Rest and Recreation (R&R) centre in Langkawi as part of its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activities.
This R&R centre is a joint collaboration with the Langkawi state government. It was officiated by Air Hangat assemblyman and Kedah speaker Datuk Juhari Bulat as well as representatives from Majlis Perbandaran Langkawi Bandaraya Pelancongan. Among them were Mukim Kuah penghulu Sulaiman Hashim, Mukim Padang Matsirat penghulu Abdul Malik, project senior general managers Allan Wong and Wan Fauzi, chief assistant district officer (development) Zulkifli Abdullah as well as Mukim Ayer Hangat penghulu Abdul Azim.
The R&R centre will sit on a half-acre parcel of land donated by Tropicana to Langkawi. Estimated to be completed in the third quarter of 2022, the renovation works include expanding the centre’s existing facilities from five to eight commercial lots.
With the main initiative of better serving the Langkawi community, the refurbished building will include an enhanced washroom, surau and car park amenities with more than 70 parking bays for cars, motorcycles and bicycles.
Tropicana executive director Khoo Thian Shyang shared more on its partnership with the Langkawi state government and the goals of the Tropicana Foundation, the group’s charity arm.
“Today’s groundbreaking marked another milestone for Tropicana, signifying its commitment to building a sustainable and vibrant township in Langkawi. The Pantai Kok Rest and Recreation Centre stands at the threshold of Tropicana’s upcoming development in the area, and we are proud to be the partner of Majlis Perbandaran Langkawi Bandaraya Pelancongan as we work hand-in-hand to uplift the community. This is in line with Tropicana Foundation’s core focus on Redefining the Art of Caring, as well as Tropicana’s recognised role as a community builder,” he said.
The Tropicana Foundation spearheads the developer’s approach to social dimensions, in line with its emphasis on ESG. Launched in 2011, the foundation encompasses outreach programmes to underprivileged segments of society, including the food bank, health, education, recycling initiatives, and employee engagement.
It also addresses environmental issues and social impacts with flood relief efforts, tree planting programmes and more. Since its inception, Tropicana Foundation has donated more than RM23mil to various charitable causes.
