IN THE aftermath of the earthquake in Ranau, Sabah, lifestyle property developer Eastern & Oriental Berhad contributed RM50,000 to aid the provision of water supply sources and installation of water tanks for affected victims.
“The earthquake has caused much despair for the people in Ranau. We hope our contribution will make a positive difference to their efforts in repairing and restoring their living conditions,” said Eastern & Oriental Berhad group corporate strategy general manager Karen De Cruz.
“This contribution will go towards the installation of water tanks and replacement of damaged gravity pipes that supply free water to villagers’ homes and farms,” added De Cruz during the cheque handover to Centre for Strategic Engagement Sdn Bhd chief executive officer and director Fui K. Soong, who had initiated and executed the scheme.
Fui said because of the continuous downpour in the highlands, a mud flood carrying stone and wood debris had clogged the water intakes at Sungai Bambangan and other main rivers in Ranau. This caused an emergency shutdown of the Ranau water treatment plant, resulting in a lack of piped water supply and drinking water in the area.
“We are encouraged by companies which empathise with the victims’ needs and strive to help restore the damaged water supply infrastructure,” said Fui.
An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Ranau on July 5, killing 18 people and causing major destruction to Ranau and its surrounding areas.
