KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak took time off his busy schedule to see first hand the progress of the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) project.
He was briefed on the RM628mil project, which is scheduled for completion in August.
Mitec, the country’s largest exhibition space, is the first component of Naza TTDI’s 166ha KL Metropolis development – an upcoming international trade and exhibition district of Kuala Lumpur costing an estimated RM20bil.
The three-level Mitec will boast an exhibition centre with a gross floor area of 1.5mil sq ft.
It will also accommodate an exhibition area of 45,348 sqm, a banquet for 28,300 people and a theatre for 47,700 and 3,000 booths.
Accompanying Najib on the visit were International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and International Trade and Industry Minister II Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan.
Also present were Naza TTDI chairman SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin, deputy executive chairman and group managing director SM Faliq SM Nasimuddin and joint executive chairman Datuk SM Faisal SM Nasimuddin.
At another event, Najib said the Government will make sure that Malaysia remained one of the most prominent economies in the region after the formation of the Asean Economic Community (AEC).
With the setting up of the AEC on Dec 31 last year, he said the International Trade and Industry Ministry must now ensure that the economic community, which will create a single market and production base in Asean, was a success.
“Miti is at the frontline when it comes to giving significance to the AEC, so it cannot stop its work now, but must ensure that Malaysia continues to be one of the most prominent economies in Asean,” Najib said when launching the ministry’s new headquarters yesterday.
The new Miti headquarters sits on a 3ha plot of land near Jalan Duta.
The 31-storey building was built at a cost of RM342mil.
