PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Budget and Business Hotel Association (MYBHA) has reiterated its call to regulate short-term accommodation, a topic that has been widely debated in recent years. Short-term accommodation refers to the rental of residential properties such as homes or apartments, for short durations, often facilitated through online platforms.

MyBHA national president Sri Ganesh Michiel said the industry continues to face challenges stemming from unregulated short-term accommodation.

“We urge the government to regulate the short-term rental accommodation (STRA) sector and address the concerns surrounding online travel agencies (OTA). Additionally, we respectfully ask for prompt resolution of any industry-related issues that are brought forward by the voices of our industry. We believe that proactive actions will create a conducive business environment for all stakeholders,” he said during the recent 23rd anniversary of MyBHA.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who officiated the ceremony, said his ministry will continue supporting the recovery of the tourism industry post-pandemic and work with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to assist the hotel industry.

“I also urge the hoteliers to upgrade the services they are providing in order to remain competitive and to make Visit Malaysia 2026 a success,” he added.

Organising chairman Jared Chia said that although the pandemic had dealt a blow to the industry, the association had proactively organized their members to make a strong comeback through various campaigns to transform their service quality and professionalism, and to have better collaborations.

“With a new clear vision and direction, MyBHA aims to take our industry to the next level. To recover after the epidemic, we must prioritise the safety and well-being of our guests and staff. Implement and maintain robust health and hygiene protocols to restore the confidence to choose our hotel services. Embrace technology and digital solutions to improve business efficiency and productivity,” he urged members.

The event also witnessed the signing of Memorandum of Understanding agreements with various service providers. In addition, various members and former officeholders were also awarded recognition for their services and contributions.

Tiong also launched the MyBHA membership app, MyBHA Connect with features including Members Hotel Directory, Digital Membership Certificate, Online Membership Payment, Event updates and Hoteliers Marketplace.
