KUALA LUMPUR: Leading green building non-governmental organisation malaysiaGBC is keeping the drive to be green shining bright with its recent annual dinner in conjunction with malaysiaGBC Leadership in Sustainability Awards 2022 .
The event saw twice the numbers as guests turned up in full force after transitioning through from the pandemic to the endemic phase of Covid 19, said event chair Nic Chin Yee Choong
Held at the Westin Kuala Lumpur last month, approximately 250 guests from the building, construction and manufacturing industries and professionals attended the dinner.
MalaysiaGBC president Sim Chee Liang addressed the hope of malaysiaGBC’s vision together with government policies to rebuild a more sustainable and resilient future for Malaysia, which is in line with the dinner’s theme Building Hope.
“Today is malaysiaGBC’s Report Card Day. We will reflect on our milestone achievements for the last 1½ years (from Jan 2021 to present) and set a clear end-pandemic mission to restart, reset and rebuild the association,“ he said.
The guest of honour of the night technologist Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor, who is also the chief executive officer of Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), expressed that excessive energy consumption from buildings has contributed to climate change.
“As of 2019, the building works in the construction industry were accountable for 30% of Greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. The high amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the construction industry has alerted the experts in the construction industry to look into the opportunity of green building,” he said.
As the only organisation in Malaysia endorsed and supported by the World Green Building Council (WGBC), the NGO promotes green building programmes, technologies, design practices and processes as well as green labels in embracing responsible sustainable measures and other green requirements for environmental, social and economic benefits.
Several presentations gave the attendees a better idea of the direction malaysiaGBC was heading towards. Dr Serina Hijjas presented the malaysiaGBC Roadmap 2021-2025, while Mitch Gelber presented the malaysiaGBC Carbon Score and the Malaysia Sustainable Development Goals and Environment, Social and Government initiative was presented by Ahmad Izdihar Supaat.
