There can be plenty of ways to double your income: Investing on a property, excelling in your career or running a business, according to Mark Chua, author of “Who says you can’t be rich working a 9 to 5 job?”
Speaking at the recently held StarProperty.my Konvensyen Hartanah, Chua said the average Malaysian salary increases 3.7% every year, which means if one works for a consecutive of 19 years, you would eventually double your income.
He said one should never wait for a promotion, as these things do not happen by chance.
According to Chua, one can succeed in securing a promotion based on one’s credibility as an employee in four ways.
“The first step is to always communicate with your boss. Then, you have to sit down with your boss once a month and draw an outline on your strength and weakness in the workplace.
“The third step involves finding a solution to improve on your performance level with your boss,” said Chua.
The final step to get a promotion at work involves adding on skills and taking up new challenges at work, said Chua, who added that the salaried worker should not risk stagnation in the career or get comfortable with oneself.
“Hard work and determination is what gives you a promotion in your workplace,” he said.
“IF you have heard of the saying ‘It’s not how much you earn but how much you save’, please forget about it,” said Mark Chua.
Sharing his personal journey from a salaried worker to an active property investor, Chua said his earnings in this early twenties were once RM1,600 per month.
He recalled his poor financial management skill, which resulted in him using up all his savings by the end of every month.
Confessing his lack of ambition at that time, Chua stressed the importance of striving to do better at work and be ambitious.
