MALACCA: Approval was given for renovation work in Christ Church which is located within the Unesco core zone in Banda Hilir here.
State Deputy Tourism, Coastal Development, River and Island Development committee chairman Datuk Ghazale Muhamad said it took two years for the state museum to obtain permission from Unesco and the National Heritage Department before work could proceed at the back portion of the building.
“Permission was granted for work to take place in a small area of the building,” he said in an interview.
Ghazale added renovation works were needed to display relics relating to Christian missionary work.
Ghazale was responding to concerns raised by stakeholders about the renovation work.
“I don’t blame anyone for the confusion as the state government should have made it public before starting work,” he said.
Christ Church was an 18th-century church built in 1753 by the Dutch.
The foundation stone of the church was laid by the captain of the Malacca Dutch Burghers community – Abraham de Wind – on behalf of his father Claas de Wind, a prominent Burgher who had been the Secunde (deputy governor) of Malacca.
With the signing of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, possession of Malacca was transferred to the British East India Company and in 1838, Christ Church was re-consecrated as a Church of England by Daniel Wilson, Bishop of Calcutta and renamed Christ Church.
The maintenance of the church was taken over by the Government of the Straits Settlements in 1858.
