LOUD laughter and cheers could be heard throughout the evening as 120 underprivileged children enjoyed Sunway Group’s Light of Hope Deepavali Cheer 2016 event in Penang.
The children were treated to Indian dances, magic shows and balloon art as they enjoyed scrumptious food including fries, pizza and dessert.
They were from St Joseph’s Home, Penang Shan Children’s Home, Children’s Protection Society and Ramakrishna Ashrama Penang.
The children also received a new school bag, stationery and a RM60 cash packet each while the homes were presented with sundries and other necessities from funds raised by the Sunway Group employees.
“We want to serve and bring joy to the Penang community in as many ways as possible.
“We try to bring people together and reach out to help those in need,” she said in her speech at the event held at Sunway Hotel George Town recently.
Sunway Group’s Light of Hope programme is under its C.A.R.E (Community Aid, Reach-Out and Enrichment) project, a pillar of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to enrich the lives of the community.
Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy, who was guest of honour at the event, praised the initiative, citing the goodness of selfless service performed without any thought of reward or payment.
“CSR programmes are very important for companies as it links them to the community at large.
“This event is a meaningful gesture to celebrate festivals with children.
“No matter who or where you are, you can give back in some way,” he said in his speech.
