JOHOR BARU: Many will assume Gen-Y and the millennials splurge on pricey material goods and lead an expensive lifestyle.
As such, it is assumed that there would be little demand for property among them.
However, property writer and consultant Khalil Adis said there was hunger among young Malaysians to purchase their first homes. Shelter, after all, falls into the most basic needs of an individual, according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Many Gen-Y’s believe owning a property is simply beyond their reach since the real estate boom, but it is the lack of financial literacy and basic know-how in property investing that stands in the way of calling a place their own.
Therefore, first-time homebuyers should hunt for a property with largest room for capital appreciation.
One of the common mistakes made by young investors is buying and investing in serviced apartments that falls into the commercial category.
These types of developments are liable to be registered for Goods and Services Tax (GST), while the occupants have to pay higher utility charges and tax rates as compared to a residential unit.
To learn more and get up close and personal with Khalil, do drop by The StarProperty.my Fair 2016 held at JB City Square, Level 1, from July 22 to 24, 10am to 10pm, where Khalil will be giving a talk on related issues.
