ISKANDAR PUTERI: The state government has been carrying out a twice-yearly census to ensure those staying in People’s Housing Programme (PPR) do not sub-let their units to third parties.
Johor Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Abd Latif Bandi said through the census, the Housing Division state secretariat will be able to update their information on the original tenant and identify units that have been sublet.
“We will also ask the tenants to renew their agreements in the second and final year of the PPR tenancy agreement,” he said during the state assembly sitting here.
Abd Latif was responding to a question posed by Datuk Maulizan Bujang (Tiram-BN) on the measures taken to overcome the issue of tenants sub-letting their PPR units for between RM400 and RM500 per month.
Maulizan also suggested the state government take back the PPR units from tenants who have been granted houses under the Johor Affordable Housing scheme (RMMJ).
Abd Latif said the state government would look into the matter to ensure owners do not take advantage of the situation.
“We will take stringent action against those found breaching their contract,” he said, adding they would educate the residents on the consequences.
When met during a break, Abd Latif said a total of RM24mil was due in rental payment as of October this year, with 9,171 PPR units being taken up statewide.
He added that the rental for PPR units ranged between RM65 and RM150 per month.
“We have a total of 11,389 units in Johor, of which 8,278 are under the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry and another 3,111 under the state government.”
He added third party tenants would be asked to vacate their units immediately.
“Some will plead to take over the tenancy agreement but we cannot allow that as there is a long waiting list,” he said, adding that applications for PPR units stood at 31,567.
