PETALING JAYA: A SEA of blue filled the space between Sunway Medical Centre Tower C and Sunway Geo in Selangor as thousands of people gathered for a good cause.

More than 6,000 people from all walks of life took part in Sunway The Good Run last Sunday to promote sustainable living and health; all proceeds will go to Cancerlink Foundation.

Sunway Bhd Property development division Malaysia and Singapore managing director Sarena Cheah said Sunway Group is committed to achieving the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

“We created the Sustainable Living Village and Sunway The Good Run as a platform to bring the community together to achieve the agenda set out in the SDGs.

Runners were taken on a track around the fully integrated green township of Sunway City to appreciate the facilities within Sunway City.

Participants of the 15km trail had the privilege of running on the elevated BRT while enjoying an elevated view of Sunway City from the track.

Those in the 5km fun run dressed up for the occasion.

In line with sustainable living practices, runners were given collapsible cups as part of their registration entitlement to rehydrate at water stops while their blue Race DRi-Fit T-shirts were made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET).

Participants were featured in four categories for the 15km competitive run – Men’s Open and Veteran; and Women’s Open and Veteran.

Loh Chooi Fern, 25, came in at 1’02:44, clinching the title of Best Malaysian Woman on top of winning the Women’s Open category, collecting RM2,000 cash in total.

“Sunway City is a great environment to run in and I’m looking forward to more of these kinds of events.

“It was also a good experience having collapsible cups at the water stations for the first time, though I need to be quicker and get used to it,” she said.

Bagging first place in the Men’s Open category and Best Malaysian Man was 21-year-old avid runner Anas Rosli, clocking in at 50:18.

The Best Dressed title in the family category went to 36-year-old Lim Chun Aun and his family. They bagged RM600 cash.

Lim and his wife, together with their two sons, came dressed in Egyptian-themed costumes and make-up, incorporating colourful awareness ribbons.

“The Egyptian idea reflects Sunway Pyramid’s theme. We also feel it is important to create a better understanding, especially for my children, of the different kinds of awareness ribbons,” said Lim, adding that it took them two weeks to prepare for the run. The costumes were specially ordered from Thailand.

A total of RM30,000 cash prizes were given out to winners of Sunway The Good Run, along with participation medals.

Besides encouraging the public to exercise and promoting a healthy lifestyle, the event also had a Sustainable Living Village at Sunway Geo, featuring activities and workshops centred on sustainability.

Visitors had a chance to immerse themselves in fun interactive workshops, live demonstrations, knowledge-sharing sessions such as learning healthy cooking methods, proper ways of managing and cooking leftover food, and creating urban farms.

This time round, Cancerlink Foundation was the main beneficiary of this initiative.

Sunway Group Healthcare Services managing director Lau Beng Long said one of the goals for The Good Run was to raise awareness about cancer and encourage lifestyle changes that would lead to the prevention of the disease.

“It would not be surprising for cancer to soon be the number one cause of death in the country.

“The reality of urban living has seen the rise of non-communicable diseases including heart disease and diabetes.

“Cancerlink Foundation focuses on providing extensive support care programmes and services to cancer patients as well as their family and friends.

“We have also acquired cutting-edge equipment to treat cancer supported by a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians to manage all types of cancer cases,” he added.

Sunway The Good Run was presented by Sunway Property and Sunway Medical Centre, in collaboration with Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) and Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, with Prudential as a sponsor and Sunway City as the official venue.

The event collected RM200,000 and all proceeds went to Cancerlink Foundation for the implementation of its Psychosocial Health Care Support Programme.

“It is an amazing initiative by Sunway Medical Centre, an internationally acclaimed medical centre, together with Sunway Property, MPSJ, Prasarana and all benevolent Malaysians because they have brought up something very important – cancer awareness.

“This one major event has committed thousands of people, including young ones, to participate and create cancer awareness, supporting Cancerlink Foundation’s initiatives that help those afflicted with cancer and their loved ones,” said Cancerlink Foundation Board of Trustees chairman Joanne V. Fernandez.

The Cancerlink Foundation’s Psychosocial Health Care Support Programme provides information support, socio-emotional caring, management of cancer treatment and physical therapy sessions which benefit thousands affected by cancer, including patients, care-givers, families, friends, colleagues as well as the public.

Sunway The Good Run for sustainable living and health is in line with five UNSDGs – SDG#3 Good Health and Well-being, SDG#9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG#11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG#12 Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG#17 Partnerships for the Goals.
