With Chap Goh Mei and Valentine’s Day around the corner, love is in the air, and it’s here in the real estate industry too as the spotlight shines on couples working as property agents or in real estate agencies here in Malaysia.
In the hectic schedules of modern times, couples who work together can spend more time with each other. However, separating one’s personal and professional lives can be tricky for some.
Here are three power couples who are enjoying success in Malaysia’s real estate industry - proving that working together with your spouse can be beneficial to your relationship and also to your career as a real estate agent or negotiator.
Desmond Tho and Janet Chong
This couple first met in their schooling days and have been a couple since 1990, marking their 30th year together. When asked how being a couple in the real estate industry has helped their careers, Chong mentioned that they exchange compliments, learn and share knowledge or experiences with each other.
In the early stages of their real estate careers, they helped each other to cover viewing appointments when one is too busy with other appointments.
“We believe when a couple does the same things or is in the same industry with the same objectives and goals, they will have a better understanding. Thus, will have a better relationship” Chong said.
James Lai and Lim Bee Yam
Lai and Lim are both probationary estate agents (PEAs) and have been married since 2014, having met each other while in the real estate industry. Although it sounds misleading, PEAs are a step above the real estate negotiators and is a title given to those who have passed the initial round of written examinations but are awaiting further examinations that prelude the real estate agent title.
This dynamic duo also covers each other at times when they are busy with other appointments. Having the added backup or support means that they don’t lose out on any appointment if possible.
“We complement each other’s weaknesses - she is good at connecting with clients while I make plans and strategies for our business. We learn so much from each other and improve together. Now we are ready to venture into larger things or take up roles or opportunities that come our way,” said Lai.
Citta Cheng and Vanessa Wong
Cheng and Wong have been a couple for 10 years now and true to the term ‘power couple’, they have been through thick and thin together.
“Working as a couple will help each other to work more efficiently because we can allocate the jobs easily and have a tacit understanding” Cheng mentioned.
He then shared a challenging moment in his career when the market was soft, and there was no sale for more than six months. Thanks to Wong’s penny-pinching skills, they were able to overcome the financial hurdles of yesteryears and reach the successes that they enjoy today.
