A PROPERTY developer has set up its own auxiliary police unit to beef up security at its township in Balik Pulau, Penang.

MTT Group of Companies executive chairman Datuk Kenny Ong said the MTT Auxiliary Police Unit started operations in April after securing a licence on Nov 29 last year.

He said the unit was set up with assistance from former Balik Pulau OCPD Lai Fah Hin, who is also the company’s security head.

“A few months after it was set up, our auxiliary police nabbed four people for theft and drug possession.

Ong said the unit had one sergeant-major and seven constables.

“We have one MPV and two motorcycles to patrol our 121.4ha vicinity.

“The policemen operate round the clock from two beat bases,” he said, adding that the company was committed to providing a safe environment for the residents.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Wira Chuah Ghee Lye said MTT Auxiliary Police Unit offered 100 vacancies but only eight were filled.

He said Penang had 40 auxiliary police agencies, adding that their presence would enhance public confidence and reduce fear.

Comm Chuah said the auxiliary policemen had the same authority as regular policemen but their jurisdiction was limited to their employment areas.

He also reminded them to uphold the image of the police force and not abuse their power.

During the launch, Comm Chuah presented certificates of appreciation to three policemen, four auxiliary policemen and two security officers who performed well in combating crime in Balik Pulau.

Also present were Balik Pulau MP Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya, Penang Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohamad Anil Shah and Balik Pulau OCPD Supt A. Anbalagan.
