PETALING JAYA: Building design competitions in Malaysia are commonplace but one that offers a prize money of RM200,000 is practically unheard of.
The Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) is partnering with the Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC) to hold the PAM-MGBC International Architectural Design Competition to envision the future MGBC headquarters.
The competition is fully funded by MGBC, though the prize money comes from Ajiya Bhd, a manufacturer of green building products.
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is offering 0.6ha of land within its Bangi campus for the construction of the winning design, which is intended to be a one-stop green building resource centre with meeting and convention facilities.
It will also be a living laboratory for UKM’s postgraduate research courses.
Postgraduate students can get a good grasp of green design principles such as passive cooling, thermal insulation, daylight harvesting, and natural ventilation.
The building will also allow studies on solar air-conditioning, photovoltaic (electricity from the sun) systems, airflow and humidity, as well as indoor air quality.
Registration for the competition closes on March 25. Entries must be submitted by June 24.
The winning design will be unveiled on July 22.
