EIGHT vehicles were clamped by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) recently formed Ops Clamping Unit during an operation carried out yesterday.

The exercise was carried out in Jalan Pahang, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Dang Wangi and Jalan Munshi Abdullah in the city centre.

Among the vehicles clamped were those temporarily parked by the roadside and even on the pedestrian walkway.

Some were lucky to make a quick dash to their cars before the officers could clamp their vehicles, however, they could not escape getting a compound for parking illegally.

One motorist who parked his car by the road, to buy a drink, ended up paying RM100 on the spot to remove the wheel clamp on his vehicle.

So far, 156 vehicles have been clamped while another 10 were towed since the unit began operations in October 2016.

DBKL Traffic and Enforcement Department formed the Ops Clamping Unit on Sept 12 to clamp illegally parked cars and fine the owners.

Focusing on main roads within the city such as Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Ampang, the unit will immediately clamp illegally parked vehicles and issue a compound on-the-spot.

“The vehicle owners will have to call our Operations Centre to remove the wheel clamp, and settle the fine of RM100, no discount will be entertained.

“Our Operations Centre will then contact us to go to the site and remove the clamps,” said an officer with the Ops Clamping Unit.

He added that the team would leave the compound and a note with contact numbers for the offenders to call, under the windshield wiper.

“When the motorist gets only a compound, they usually have an apathetic attitude, so by clamping and compelling them to pay the compound on-the-spot, they will think twice about repeating the offence.

“Car owners have four hours to contact us to settle the fine and and get the clamp removed.

“If they do not respond after four hours; their cars will be towed to our depot in Sentul.

Offenders will be required to pay RM100 for towing fees and an additional RM100 every 24 hours the vehicle is left at the depot as lot rental cost.
