SHAH ALAM: The company that supplied the crane which crushed a woman to death is currently the subject of multiple investigations by various authorities.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that its Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) would investigate if site workers were competent and qualified.
''We want to ensure if they are qualified, registered with the CIDB and possess a green card.
''As for the company, it has to be registered with CIDB with a certain class and category that allows it to conduct the operations at the site.
''We will investigate these two aspects before deciding on the action,'' he said when met after a visit to the Federal Highway motorcycle lane near the Batu 3 toll plaza here on Monday.
Fadillah said that all safety aspects – regardless if it was a factory or project site – is under purview of the Department of Occupational Health and Safety (DOSH), which will be investigating and taking action against either the crane operator or owner, including the company involved in the project.
The Ministry's action, he said, would depend on the investigations from DOSH, the police and CIDB itself.
On Thursday, Chin Khoon Sing from George Town, Penang, was driving along Jalan Raja Chulan at about 7.15pm when part of a construction crane fell on her car from a 20-storey height, killing her instantly.
The crane operator reportedly fled the scene.
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, crane drivers must be Malaysians.
''We will see whether the contractor and workers at the site are registered or not.
''If not we can take action against the workers and also the contractor for hiring incompetent and unregistered workers,'' added Fadillah.
He noted that investigations were ongoing and the Ministry would wait for all the parties to complete them.
