GEORGE TOWN: A non-governmental organisation has urged the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to inspect the safety of all development projects on hillslopes following the tropical storm which hit the state last Friday.
Citizens Awareness Chant Group (Chant) adviser Yan Lee said the council should form a special team to monitor hill projects especially in Sungai Ara and Tanjung Bungah.
“Every time it rains for two to three hours, they should carry out inspections to ensure the safety of the residents there.
“After that, they should also provide them with a detailed report,” he told a press conference in Lorong Pykett yesterday.
He said that in 2016, the Penang Hills Watch (PHW), a watchdog launched by Penang Forum, filed 29 complaints to state Local Government, Flood Mitigation and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow during a meeting.
“And recently, the PHW said there were 12 cases of land clearing carried out without approval.
“We want to know the current status of these cases,” he said.
