PETALING JAYA: Climate Governance Malaysia (CGM), a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting climate governance and sustainable development in Malaysia, has announced the recipients of The Hornbill Award 2023, recognising their exemplary contributions in conservation efforts within Malaysia.
The Hornbill Award, initiated in 2021, focuses on the vital area of conservation, dedicated to preserving and managing biodiversity and natural resources amidst the urgent need for environmental stewardship.
The prestigious award aims to highlight and support non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or civil society organisations (CSOs) committed to biodiversity conservation. The winners are selected based on innovative proposals aligned with the competition's theme, contributing to the preservation of Malaysia's rich natural heritage.
For the The Hornbill Award 2023, CGM announced that Rainforest conservation NGO 1StopBorneo Wildlife was honoured with the grand prize of RM100,000. Their project focuses on enhancing Tawau Hill’s Park and surrounding areas and Deramakot Forest Reserve Centre, embodying a dedication to the protection and enhancement of Sabah and Sarawak's natural ecosystems.
Additionally, a special award of RM40,000 was presented to Johor-based environmental education club Kelab Alami Mukim Tanjung Kupang. The committee was impressed by their educational and conservation endeavours addressing marine and terrestrial environmental issues, particularly in the vicinity of Forest City, Johor.
"The CGM Hornbill 2023 Awards Committee commends both 1StopBorneo Wildlife and Kelab Alami for their outstanding contributions to conservation," said CGM council member Datuk Henry Barlow. “Their initiatives exemplify a commitment to sustainability, climate resilience, and community engagement, essential for achieving our shared environmental goals."
The Hornbill Award not only acknowledges outstanding conservation efforts but also underscores the importance of partnerships between government, private sector and civil society in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. Recipients are expected to provide half-yearly reports in 2024, ensuring transparency and accountability in fund utilisation and project outcomes.
CGM remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting biodiversity conservation and climate action, in alignment with Malaysia's national policies and international commitments, including the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
