GEORGE TOWN: A state exco member has asked for the special ‘step-up’ end-financing scheme for the PR1MA programme announced under Budget 2017to be extended to state governments and private developers to assist low-income homebuyers.
State Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the special scheme offering up to 100% financing should also be extended to the poor.
“Why is it not being extended to the state government for their projects or the private sector which also provides low-cost (LC), low middle-cost (LMC) and affordable units?
He said applications by the low-income group for LC and LMC housing loans priced between RM42,000 and RM72,500 was “high ... up to 75%”.

Expressing his disappointment that the ‘step up’ programme was confined only to PR1MA, he said he would raise the matter when meeting Deputy Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique in December.
“These units are not built by PR1MA, which provides housing costing up to RM500,000 and considered unaffordable for many.”
