Inaugural awards marks significant milestone in excellence in steel architecture
The inaugural BlueScope Steel Architectural Awards 2024 in Malaysia (BSAA MY), launched on June 15 this year, represents a significant milestone in promoting the innovative, sustainable and creative use of steel in architecture. Aptly themed Beautiful Strength, the prestigious awards celebrate both the aesthetic and structural qualities of steel.
The BSAA MY aims to showcase projects that push the boundaries of steel's potential and its diverse applications. From commercial and industrial developments to residential and institutional projects, the awards focus on the beauty and strength that steel brings to modern architecture.
By promoting best practices, the awards encourage knowledge-sharing through the review of completed projects that utilise BlueScope steel materials and solutions. Moreover, this initiative seeks to raise awareness of the innovative use of steel in architectural design, ultimately showcasing Malaysia’s architectural successes on a global platform.
The awards highlight five main categories, each representing key aspects of steel application in various sectors. Submissions will be judged based on four key criteria, namely Design Excellence, Community and Humanity, Innovation and Sustainability.
A distinguished panel of architects and industry experts was selected to evaluate the submissions. This jury includes Archicentre director Tan Loke Mun, Hijjas Kasturi Associates principal and creative director Serena Hijjas, AR RAD Architects PLT managing director Adrianta Aziz, Star Hospitality Luxe founder Alan Koh and Australia’s Nation Architects director Robert Nation.
For the commercial category, MJ Kanny Architect took the Gold for VanaVasa Resort while MOA Architects won the Silver for Iringan Bayu Sales Gallery and TKCA Architect earned the Bronze for Sama Square. Commendations went to Razin Architects for Talula Hill Farm Resort and Lee M Architect. S/Lab10 and WKL Design for The Commune Lifestyle Mall.
Razin Architects claimed both the Gold and Bronze awards in the Institutional and Others category for Masjid Daing Abdul Rahman and Dewan Konvensyen Bukit Raja, respectively. Veritas Architects secured the Silver for the Petronas Leadership Centre, while commendations were awarded to Kun Lim Architect for the SkyArena Sports Complex and JRC Architects for the Ching Ang Methodist Church.
In the Industrial category, only commendations were given, with awards going to Kooi Keat Architect and Asima Architects for Hap Seng Business Park, LSA Architects and IDA Alliance for Dexion Malaysia Smart Hub, and Habitat Design Architects for Ghee Hiang Manufacturing Company. The Residential category also saw a commendation, awarded to A&A Architects for KK TwentyFive.7 Phase 2A.
For the Lasting Beauty of COLORBOND® Steel category, Arkiskape took home the Gold for CIDB Convention Centre Sarawak while the Silver and Bronze went to Aki Media for University of Technology Sarawak and KH Architect for Penang Island Waste Transfer Station respectively. Commendations went to Kun Lim Architect for 12 Waves Logistics Centre and Akitek Supra for Lexis Hibiscus.
The winners of BSAA MY will advance to the Asean level, competing against the top winners from Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. The competition fosters greater understanding of steel's versatility and promotes closer collaboration within the region. Gold winners from each category in Malaysia will join their Asean counterparts to vie for the ultimate title at the BlueScope Steel Architectural Awards 2024, Asean level.
This exciting initiative not only celebrates steel’s contribution to modern architecture but also sets a new standard for innovation and sustainability, shaping the future of construction in Malaysia and across the Asean region.
