THE Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) has planted a total of 10,658 trees from 2008 until Aug 31.
Council president Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif said 51,800 more were planted by property developers and another 2,754 trees were planted by the public through corporate social responsibility and community initiatives.
She said that through an initiative by the Tanjung Lions Club, 100 raintrees would be planted along Jalan Song Ban Keng, starting from the Jalan Binjai junction in Bukit Mertajam.
She added that 50 would be planted this month while the remaining 50 would be planted next month.
“We would like to thank the state Forestry Department for providing the trees too,” she said after the event.
Tanjung Lions Club chairman Datuk Alvin Lim Teng Hooi, who was also present, said the club was hoping that in a few years’ time, the trees would grow and provide more green to the area.
“The trees are able to live up to 150 years and will benefit the future generations to come,” he said.
Also present during the ceremony were MPSP secretary Rozali Mohamud and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim.
