SMK Seri Kembangan (SMKSK) has raised RM1mil to build a new auditorium and is RM600,000 away from its target.
SMK Seri Kembangan principal Tay Keng Lee, at a fundraising dinner for the project at Restoran Hai Thian in Seri Kembangan, said RM1.6mil was needed for the project.
“Over the years, SMKSK has progressed and developed into a school that we are proud of.
“Since the day I began my career here, I have had visions of transforming this school into a place of academic excellence and, at the same time, creating opportunities for our students to participate in different co-curricular activities,” he said adding that the 52-year-old school has 3,650 students.
Orando Holdings Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Dr Eng Wei Chun, who was the guest of honour at the dinner, donated RM30,000 for the auditorium project.
He first visited the school last year to hand over the sponsored subscription for The Star e-Paper.
“Students bowed as they greeted me and that was a memorable first impression.
“From what I was told, it is not easy to run a school, especially without resources or aid from the Chinese guilds and associations.
“Hopefully the public can come forward and lend a helping hand,” he said.
Orando Holdings previously donated one-year subscriptions of The Star e-Paper worth RM34,000 to 200 teachers, administrative staff and committee members of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).
The Star e-Paper includes four regional e-Papers – China Daily Asia Weekly, The Nation, Jakarta Post and The Philippine Daily Inquirer. The developer will also be sponsoring newspapers for the school.
Also present at the dinner were Serdang MCA division chairman Datuk Liew Yuen Keong, PTA chairman Datuk Teo Geck Heng, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong’s press secretary Lim Ching Hao, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Siang Woon’s special officer How Lee Choon, Seri Kembangan Federal Village Security and Development Committee (JKKKP) chairman Tang Kim Loy, PTA deputy chairman Daniel Lin, PTA former chairmen Loo Phan Kooi and Datuk Dr Ivan Hoe Wat Sing and PTA development unit former chairman Lee Tak San.
