JOHOR BARU: A lawmaker has urged the state government to do more to assist victims of abandoned housing projects.
Bukit Batu assemblyman Jimmy Puah Wee Tse said the failure of developers to deliver their projects on time had caused much suffering.
He said statistics from the state government showed that there were 10 abandoned housing projects in 2014 with 3,362 units in Johor Baru, Kulai, Kluang, Muar and Segamat districts.
“It is unfair as the buyers not only have to service their housing loans but also keep paying rental as they can’t move to their own houses,” Puah said in a press conference.
Puah said the developers should resolve all these problems before selling the houses to buyers and at the same time, the authorities should not approve their projects if they fail to comply with the regulations.
He cited a case in Kulai where a housing project which started 20 years ago had yet to be completed as the developer had ceased operations.
“Imagine the suffering faced by buyers who bought the houses some two decades ago and still cannot move in, added Puah.
