On May 21st 2011, a landslide in Hulu Langat claimed the lives of 16 people and most of them were children whom are residents of the Madrasah Al-Hidayah at-Taqwa. Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment Committee chairman Elizabeth Wong stated that human activities are to be blamed for this tragedy as there are many cutting of the slopes were too steep and there is nothing done to strengthen the slopes.Another news involving Hulu Langat that has made headlines is that the Selangor Government are no longer allow new development which includes housing developments to take place near an existing temple. Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim stated that developers who did not inform their buyers of the existence in their project must now bear the consequences as it is not easy to relocate an existing temple.According to reports, Muslim residents of Taman Lagenda Suria were unhappy with a temple situated about 20m away from their homes and the site of the temple has been approved 9 years ago. It might be a bit inconvenient as there are limited public transportation for residents who wish to commute to and fro Taman Lagenda Suria to other areas.
