Last year, there was a protest by residents of Melawati Hillside Apartment opposing the building of a sewage treatment plant (STP) in that area. Residents feared that the development will pollute the river and cause environmental damages. Residents are worried because about 10 years ago during a heavy downpour, the Klang Gates dam released its water and the rover was overflowed. This has caused several apartment blocks in Melawati Hillside Apartment to be flooded. Residents did not know about this development until they saw heavy machinery clearing the land near Klang River. Residents there stated that they were not informed of any construction work being done near the river. The STP is now being placed 45.9m from the apartment blocks and is built on the developer’s land and not part of the river reserve. A 3m retaining wall is also built at the boundary of the site. However, during a heavy downfall on March 7th, 2011, residents of Melawati Hillside Apartment were living in fear as they saw the downpour brought down the retaining wall, causing sand and rock to be washed down the river and thus polluting it.Residents questioned the development on the other side of the retaining wall stating that they have seen water flowing from the site to the river. Some residents have taken this matter to the MPAJ and Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) with hopes that they can monitor and maintain the riverbanks and bed in that area.
