Christmas shopping with Daniel Tan

If you think guys are lousy at Christmas shopping, you haven’t met Daniel Tan yet. The model turned actor, who is currently taking time off work to concentrate on his studies, proved that guys can shop too. Star Property gives Tan a RM500 budget and takes him on a shopping spree in Metrojaya.

The Shopping Challenge

Tan looks serious as he scans his shopping list. We take a peek at it and notice that there’s no Christmas tree on it. Instead, listed down are many home decorative items. The personable lad thoughtfully crosses off one item after the other as he shops.

Given only 20 minutes, he wastes no time and rushes to grab a Christmas wreath (RM39.90), a box of decorative lights (RM10.90), a box of Christmas tree ornaments (RM 32), a Christmas stocking (RM23), red cushions with black fishnet laces (RM109 each) and three candle holders (RM11.90 each).

Fourteen minutes tick by and Tan is almost finished with his shopping. He may be quick, but the 27-year-old is a rather careful shopper – he doesn’t just grab everything he sees.

According to him, he thinks about the style of his condominium, the colours and the practicality of the products before putting it in his basket.

Since there is still time left, Tan decides to shop for his loved ones too. Not only is he quick and decisive when selecting items, he is also fast when shopping for presents.

Tan selects a red faux-leather magazine basket (RM59.90), a photo album (RM17.90) and a few gift boxes (RM7.90 each). He finishes off the challenge by grabbing a plump pillow for himself.

Boy, this man sure knows how to shop without breaking the budget.

Being curious, we asked the heartthrob who will he give the gifts to?

He informs us that the magazine basket with the faux crocodile skin cover makes the perfect gift for a female friend. Meanwhile, the photo album is a gift to himself. Despite being a model for years, Tan has never owned an album.

“Thanks to the digital camera. But there is a sentimental feeling about photos in an album, you know... and I will start developing my photos with friends and family!” he says.

Christmas plans
The eligible bachelor, who lives alone in his condominium, plans to have family and friends over this Christmas.

“When I was a lot younger, my family and I used to go back to Ipoh to visit my grandparents from my mum’s side during Christmas,” he says.

It was a huge family gathering complete with a big Christmas tree and loads of presents under the tree. But such a festive celebration is a thing of the past.

“About 10 years ago, my granddad passed away. My grandmother relocated to Penang. Ever since then, we do not celebrate Christmas together that often,” Tan shares.

Tan also confesses that since working, Christmas is merely a season that comes and goes. At the most, he would plan an annual catch-up session with close family and friends, some time off work and “Perhaps... going to church. There were, of course, times when Christmas meant partying with friends.”

However this year, the budding actor is determined to have a proper do, and we hope the things he bought during the Star Property challenge will come in handy.
